Programme Director: Professor Andrew McCaskie
The Cambridge Academic Foundation Programme (AFP) supports training and recruitment to posts in Health Education East of England’s East Anglian Foundation School and Bedfordshire, Essex and Hertfordshire Foundation School.
It is aimed at doctors who are considering a career path as a clinical academic.
Academic foundation doctors follow the same curriculum and must attain the same outcomes as other foundation doctors but, in addition, they undertake academic research.
A place on an AFP offers the opportunity to spend protected time on academic research. At Cambridge, this will comprise one 4 month rotation during FY2. The remaining five rotations will be clinical attachments, during which clinical competencies must be met.
Usually, 24 posts are recruited each year, with an August start date. Trainees are recruited in groups of three to a variety of specialities, which include: Medicine, Neurocritical Care & Pain, Neurosciences and Surgery.
Following appointment, trainees are able to select their academic rotation from one of a number of fields, for example: Clinical Radiology, Experimental Medicine, Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Oncology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry or Transplant and Regeneration.
The Cambridge AFP is a well-established and successful programme. The 2 Foundation Schools, University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals Trust all work together to offer AFP trainees clinical and academic rotations that meet their clinical and academic needs. The Programme is well supported in the University’s academic departments and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus ensures that trainees have access to outstanding researchers and leading clinicians in their field.
Information on eligibility for the AFP can be found on The UK Foundation Programme Office website.
Application to the Academic Foundation Programme is a national process, managed through The UK Foundation Programme Office. Once applications have been made, the Health Education East of England Foundation Schools (Anglian Foundation School and Bedfordshire, Essex and Hertfordshire Foundation School) manage the local process.
